The fifth semester studio allows for a chance to pursue directed research. The studio began working from a speculative perspective with the intention of developing a commentary for future design.
The approach taken was to utilize AI scripting to create uncanny images representative of facades, sections or plans. Through selected visual keys a new materialism was born by the use of a Style Transfer Neural Network. At first glance the imagery was familiar, but under a more strict observation it was highly complex and unusual. Taking precedent from artists such as Dustin Yellin, an analysis of how a 2D image could be interpolated into three dimensions was explored. This speculation led to 5-Axis models which read depth and aperture into a three dimensional space. Working with A,I. in a collaborative effort allowed for vast amounts of data and iterations to be generated in an instant. Through this exploratory method of design the question of value arose. The precision and articulation of the data embedded could take months or even years to interpret, leaving us as the designer to make final decisions.
